Rights Group Questions Italy After Libyan Coast Guard Sends Migrants To Detention Center

Europe’s top human rights group requested for more information from Italy regarding its work intercepting migrants at sea — cautioning attempts to return them to Libya would violate international treaties, according to Reuters. The Council of Europe said on Wednesday it sent a letter to the Italian government one day after an Italy navy vessel helped the Libyan coast guard as it stopped 228 migrants, the report said. The coast guard then returned the migrants to Libya. Italy would violate the European Convention on Human Rights if it is involved in the return of the migrants to Libya where they face “a real risk of torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” the Council’s human...
