Moms have been known to throw some pretty memorable parties, but this mother is out to save lives. Laura Metro's "CPR parties" might sound unusual -- compared to the common Tupperware gathering -- but they're uniting parents to learn a lifesaving tool that just might prevent one of the leading causes of death among small children.

The 42-year-old Maryland mom's mission is extremely personal, as her son Clay almost drowned back in 2011 after falling into a pool. Thankfully, a family friend saved Metro's then-3-year-old, which is what inspired Metro to learn CPR herself and teach others.

Metro's CPR Party organization aims to bring CPR and child drowning awareness to the masses through an in-home, hour-long course that will teach moms and dads CPR and give them the confidence to use the emergency procedure if and when necessary.

"It's just such an easy format -- we replace the shopping with a certified instructor-trainer of CPR to do an hour, or an hour and a half, awareness course, and boom, you're done," Metro tells the Washington Post. "People are loving it."

With more than 150 parties under her belt, this mom uses her son's near tragedy to help educate parents and provide a platform to discuss the difficult topic of being able to help our kids in an emergency.

"People don't want to talk about kids dying -- people just blame the person that's there," Metro tells the Washington Post while discussing child drowning. ".... This is just insanity -- to see how many kids are passing away and the families are just destroyed. I mean, you can't imagine. We need to do more."

The CDC estimates three children die every day from drowning. Since drowning is the leading cause of injury death among children ages 1 to 14, initiatives like Metro's CPR Party are a godsend and an amazing resource, especially during the summer months when more and more children are heading to pools and beaches.

It truly takes a community to raise a child, and this mom is proving just that.

"I was supposed to lend a voice to this and help elevate this cause, and be a part of this and help others to not experience what we did," Metro tells the Washington Post. "That level of emotional pain and fear and desperation -- you wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy in the entire world. It's really easy to learn CPR and empower yourself with this lifesaving skill."
