Genocide Trial Against Former Guatemalan Dictator Rios Montt Scheduled to Restart

A lawyer said a second trial against former Guatemalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt will take place on Friday after he allegedly ordered massacres of Maya Indians during a lengthy civil war, according to Reuters. Rios Montt ruled Guatemala in 1982 and 1983 after a military coup and was convicted of genocide four years ago alongside another military officer, the report said. However, the ruling was overturned. Lawyer for the relatives of victims Edgar Pérez said on Wednesday a Supreme Court tribunal will hear the case. Relatives led a long campaign against the former dictator, the report said.
